Arnout Schuijff, co-founder of Dutch payments company Adyen, invests in an initiative called TRSHBG (trashbag) to make every surfer and every diver helping to clean the oceans. TRSHBG, offers sophisticated wearable bags that divers and surfers can use to put trash in whenever they encounter it. The initiative is growing fast and calls out to other organisations to join the movement.

Every divers and surfers counts

“We, divers and surfers, get to places others don’t go. We are first to see the litter and the trash in the ocean. And we are first in line to do something about it. Now we can. Taking away ocean litter on every dive or surf, reduces the threat to animals, to coral and eventually even avoids the litter to enter our food chain. Now every surfer and every diver, can remove trash whenever they see it, on every session.” says Trieu Huynh, creator of TRSHBG.

The TRSHBG team continues: “There are approximately 7 million divers and 25 million surfers worldwide. Something to collect trash comfortably should be part of their standard equipment. Within a year, TRSHBG has welcomed a few thousand new ocean cleaners.

If we all do something, the impact is huge. It would be fantastic if every surfer and every diver becomes an ocean cleaner.” Arnout Schuijff, co-founder of Dutch payments company Adyen, says about his investment in TRSHBG: “Apart from the actual cleaning of the ocean. which is great, I think that seeing surfers and divers clean and care about the ocean has a positive impact on the community as a whole. It makes people think twice about single use plastics. And if they do use them, to not just dump them on the streets, on the beach or in the sea.

TRSHBG products are handmade from old banners and old scooter tubes, striving for a fully recycled product. According to the team’s experience, the use of the TRSHBG leads to cleaner oceans. It also increased awareness for the damage single use plastics can cause. Others see the cleaning activity and might want to join. Cleaners start to think about how to adjust their own consumption pattern. And after collecting large amounts of single use bags/straws/cups/caps/ wraps/forks/bottles.

From Amsterdam, Biarritz, Berlin, Stuttgart, Quebec and Bali TRSHBG works with partners worldwide and is rapidly expanding that network. Yet it is always looking for more people and organisations, who also value a cleaner world, to join the movement.
